Writing a Novel

a 6-week course with Susanna Jones

Starts Saturday 5th March in Brighton

'Susanna is a brilliant creative writing teacher and mentor who is now mentoring me through my second book. She has that rare capacity to pinpoint exactly what works and doesn’t work in a piece of writing, and why.'

                                                        Hilary S.

'Susanna's artful teaching method helps you get those words down on the page with no pain or shame. Inspiring!'

                                                       Madeleine C.

Note:

This course is now full. It will run again in summer 2022, dates to be confirmed. Sign up to the mailing list for announcements or get in touch to register your interest.

Are you just starting to write a novel, finding ideas for your first draft, or are you in the middle of writing your novel now? Perhaps you have a draft that isn't quite there yet and you're not sure why it isn't working or what to do next. Perhaps you've made several attempts to start a novel and given up each time. This course is for all of you.

Susanna Jones has many years' experience teaching and mentoring novelists, from complete beginners to writers at MA and PhD level. She'll help you find new ways into your material, ways of developing and shaping your fiction while honing your own voice and learning how to use it, or use it better. In a friendly and supportive atmosphere, you'll find that the ideas come easily, your confidence as a writer will grow and you'll have fun in the process.

Some things we'll cover: getting started (or finding new pathways, if you're already working on your novel); developing ideas and characters; narrative voice and point of view; sense of place and atmosphere; storyline and shape.

You’ll have plenty of time to write, ask questions and try out new ideas so you can see your work develop week by week. You’ll also have access to an online members’ area for optional exercises and activities between sessions. As an optional add-on, you can arrange to have a 1-1 session with Susanna for editorial feedback on an extract from your novel. This may be done via Zoom or in person, by arrangement.

Saturdays, 10.00–12.00

5th March – 9th April

Venue: St Augustine's Arts and Events Centre, Brighton BN1 6EA

Our lovely venue, at St Augustine's Arts and Events Centre, is spacious and well-ventilated.

Note: if you have a prior engagement and have to miss a session, you'll be able to catch up on anything you miss via the members' page. Materials and discussion points will be posted there after each session so you can work on them in your own time.
