Perhaps you're working on a memoir or would like to set down experiences or family stories so that they're not forgotten. Perhaps there are particular events you'd like to write about in order to understand them better, or you'd just like to develop your writing skills using material that's familiar to you. This course is suitable for writers of all levels and experience. You'll be able to work at your own level and pace. You'll also have a 45-minute one-to-one tutorial (via Zoom) which you can use during the course or up to 3 months afterwards. For the one-to-one session you are welcome to send up to 4,000 words in advance.

We'll spend part of the time working on craft and technique through writing prompts and discussion, and part on feedback on the writing you do during the week. You can use the exercises and prompts to develop brand new work or to explore further something you're already working on. You’ll have time to write, ask questions and try out new ideas so you can see your work develop week by week. You could use the course to work towards a full-length book or to complete one or more stand-alone pieces.

There is no pressure to share your writing if and when you'd prefer not to. The aim of the course is to provide a relaxed and supportive environment in which to develop your ideas and your craft. The group is small (maximum 6 participants) in order to facilitate this.

Susanna Jones has many years' experience teaching and mentoring writers, from beginners to writers at MA and PhD level. She'll help you find new ways into your material, ways of developing and shaping your writing while honing your own voice. In a friendly and supportive atmosphere, you'll find that the ideas should come easily, your confidence as a writer will grow and you'll have fun in the process.

Please note: if you are writing work of a very personal nature, you may not always feel comfortable sharing it with the group. While there is never any obligation to read work in the sessions, it is worth giving some thought to what you would like to gain from the sessions and how best to approach the course when writing on sensitive or difficult subject matter. If you are unsure or have any questions, please do get in touch to discuss.
